This model from North Mountain Blade is a high-performance folding knife that blends a bold, post-apocalyptic "Zombie" aesthetic with sophisticated Japanese metallurgy and modern deployment mechanics.
1. The Blade: SLD-Magic 3-Layer Steel
The standout technical feature of this knife is the SLD-Magic San Mai (3-layer) steel.
Core Material: The center cutting core is made of SLD-Magic, a high-end tool steel from Hitachi Metals. It is designed to offer exceptional hardness and wear resistance, comparable to D2 but with improved toughness and ease of sharpening.
The Lamination: Being a 3-layer steel, the hard SLD-Magic core is sandwiched between two layers of tougher stainless steel. This construction provides the perfect balance of a razor-sharp, long-lasting edge and a blade body that can withstand impact without snapping.
Hamon Line: Notice the wavy line near the edge; this is the visible transition between the different steel layers, reminiscent of traditional Japanese swords.
2. Finish & Aesthetics: "Zombie Blood" & Black DLC
Black DLC Coating: The blade is finished with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC). This is an incredibly hard, scratch-resistant coating that not only eliminates reflections but also provides a high level of corrosion resistance to the tool steel core.
Zombie Blood Theme: The handle features a vibrant "Electric Green" base with a Red Splatter coating, commonly referred to in the EDC community as a "Zombie Blood" or "Biohazard" colorway. It’s a fun, high-visibility look that stands out in any collection.
3. Handle & Ergonomics: Aluminum Alloy
Material: The handle is machined from High-Strength Aluminum Alloy. This material keeps the knife lightweight and agile while maintaining structural rigidity.
4. Mechanism: Button Lock & One-Handed Operation
This knife is designed for rapid, fluid deployment and safe closure.
Button Lock: The primary mechanism is a Button Lock, which allows you to release the blade with a simple press. It is highly intuitive and keeps your fingers out of the blade's path when closing.
Versatile Opening: It supports multiple one-handed opening methods:
Flipper Tab: Use the index finger to "light-switch" the blade open.
Thumb Stud: A gold-toned thumb stud provides a classic manual opening option.
Gravity/Button Deployment: By holding the button down, you can flick the blade open or closed using centrifugal force, thanks to the smooth internal bearing system.
5. Blade Geometry: Modified Tanto
The blade features a Tanto-style tip, providing a strong secondary point and a reinforced tip for piercing. The slight curve in the primary edge makes it more versatile for slicing than a strictly angular American Tanto.
